What happens in the art room....

There are always funny things that happen in the art room. Some things are thoughtful, some things are silly and some things just make me laugh out loud. An outsider to my classroom might think that the class is loud, unstructured and chaotic.

Art for children is not a quiet endeavor. When children are exploring and discovering new experiences, they get excited. They squeal, they shout, they move around the room because they want to share it with the world that they are alive.

Today we learned about puppets and how people tell stories about puppets. It was a very enthusiastic class. However, one boy in particular, was really excited that he made a pair of underwear when he cut out two circles from the corners of a piece of paper. He made three pair. One with a smiley face and two plain white. The next thing I notice is there are two other boys making underwear. They weren’t trying to be funny or disruptive but they were learning from their friend how to do it and they wanted to try. This is the kind of ground roots learning that make my job so fun. On a day that I felt so rotten, it finished on a high note because I get to share in the discovery learning of these 6 year olds.
